Appetite for Production

Tim Cant and James Russell are two irreverent and entertaining journalists with the "banter" and a few expletives to rip into music production news and a few laughs along the way. You will hear more than just music production news and reviews. Listen to the podcasts, Tim and James offer a peek into their lives as music journalists, with topics ranging from rat infestations to burnout syndrome. Definitely the most entertaining of the podcasts here.

Hanging out with Audiophiles

Created by musician and sound designer Jamie Lidell, Hanging Out with Audiophiles combines artist interviews, audio sketches and experiments, and gear reviews. Jamie's experimentation and musicality are central to the podcast. But he also attracts interesting artists, such as Oliver, whose sample packs Power Tools racked up over 1 million downloads on Splice, multi-instrumentalist Jack Garrett of Weathered fame, and Dave Rossum. Jamie has been podcasting since September 2017 and hopefully keeps going for a long time.

The Mr Bill Podcast

Mr Bill is a well known Ableton Live educator and sound designer. His podcast guests include musicians such as Virtual Riot and sound designer Richard Devine. A recent highlight was his nearly 2 hour long interview with plugin creator Steve Duda of Xfer Serum fame, who revealed his philosophy behind one of the most used VST instruments, and that he is working on version 2.0.

My Forever Studio

Published by magazine Musictech.net and hosted by Will Betts & Chris Barker, this podcast interviews artists, engineers and producers on topics all around the music studio. Recent episodes include Gary Barlow and his engineer, Andrew Huang of YouTube fame, Flux Pavilion with his unique mix of hardware and software, and the uber-gear aficionado BT. Covering everything from hardware to software, geeking out about plugin settings and vocal chains, to deciding on desert island processors, this podcast is great for geeks and gear heads.

The Producergrind Podcast

This podcast focuses on beat makers and producers in rap, hip hop and related genres. What is different here is that the team and their guests reveal their journeys and learnings as beat makers in the business, and not just talk music technology or production alone. The team also runs a YouTube channel called Producergrind 2.0, which gained over 100,000 subscribers.

Tape Notes

Tape Notes is a long running behind the scenes podcast interviewing producers and songwriters. Uniquely, the producers reveal their first demoes, and solo recorded tracks, so you can listen to how they write and produce music, while they explain how they went about it. This is a gem for music producers. I not only learnt a lot, and gained a sense of perspective, not trying to go chase purported perfection in my productions, but follow my feelings and trust my ears.
